An emphasis is made on the coordinate free analysis. I appreciated this aspect. It encourages you to develop the theory of linear algebra by posing questions. It is printed in full color and has lots of sidebars and incidental graphics.

The best part of it is you will get the correct answer all the time. To do this, we must get rid of the 4. It gave me a much better understanding of the subject matter. Calculus is a prerequisite for the course.

Blueprint for Problem Solving These are detailed outlines of the steps needed to successfully solve application problems. Modularity rating: 5 The book is very modular and each chapter is broken up into short manageable sections that are easily accessed by clicking in the table of contents. Better test yourself just to see if you really know The site is very user friendly and it was nice being able to test my knowledge to see if I could skip any lessons. McDonald My personal pick for a first course This is a no-frills textbook for a one-semester course in linear algebra that focuses very heavily on algorithms and applications. I passed both the Birth-2nd math test as well as the math test the first time after going through the MathHelp site.

Introductory Algebra book

The author has an expansive view of linear algebra, and from time to time draws in some calculus, Fourier series, wavelets, and function spaces, but the approach is always very concrete. The most helpful part was that the course broke the math concepts down to the most basic step before solving the example problems, and that the course started with the rounding and place values.

The worded problems do not have a great deal of special names of people or places or events, thus they appear to be applicable to many groups and should be pertinent for many years. Remember, give yourself a chance! Regarding Hoffman-Kunze, suffice it to say that all undergraduate-level material is done the right way and then somemeaning that everything is proved, very carefully and with no compromises, and material is dealt with that is most often introduced no earlier than in graduate algebra, or possibly in an honors course in advanced linear algebra.

Introductory Algebra by Margaret Lial

Again, there are thousands of examples and problems to help guide you in this learning experience to make learning algebra easy and fun. Brandi Lewis 24 Aug 19 I actually placed out of a couple math courses and saved myself 3 free credits!

Accuracy I did not see any errors. Add the next number to the sum, Step 3. This book is also good for self-study as there is a solution munual for it. Anticipating Problems in the Problem Set We try to anticipate problems students have and build features into the text that address these problems.

It is not expected that you will know the meaning of every word -- your book author does not know either. This book reminds one of the Programmed Instruction books of the 50s, 60s, 70s, and 80s where one was forced to learn by having to work through the text.

Each Section details the information of a specific topic with clearly defined objectives, examples and problems. Also, located near the bottom of any page you will see a link to all the Chapters that compose this work. Strom, K. It's like a cooking recipe for mathematics.

When John Hornsby enrolled as an undergraduate at Louisiana State University, he was uncertain whether he wanted to study mathematics education or journalism. If not, you might want to re-read the lesson, browse some other algebra lessonsor ask for help. Bibliografische Informationen. In fact, it is not unusual to find an entire section of a chapter devoted to word problems.

The book is also very clearly written and fairly leisurely. Here is the algorithm: Adding Numbers: Step 1. I have recommended your program to many fellow teachers.Introductory Algebra: Concepts with Applications.

The textbook should not be considered a comprehensive treatment of algebra. The goal of the textbook is to teach a set of problem solving skills in some of the more fundamental areas of algebra/5(15). This book, Introductory Algebra, takes a different approach to things.

Not only do you cover the manipulations needed to solve an equation, deal with graphing, solving quadratics and so forth, but you also work though practical examples of how to apply the solution to real-life problems.
