Abstract: Russell Smith's highly praised new novel features some typically caustic satire, alongside a deep and melancholy awareness of the force of desire in our lives. Her next book, a novel called Acts of Salvage, is forthcoming. What Smith is saying here is that the literate, liberal culture — and economy — that created the Muriella Pents and their earnest, politically correct hangers-on is all but dead, replaced by loud, brash surfaces, primitive emotional needs and an almost demonic suburban sprawl. Smith was born with complete complex syndactylyhaving inherited the deformity from his father and grandfather; Smith's own son, Hugo, was born with the condition.

Justin, a self-absorbed, over-educated urbanite in his early thirties, watches helplessly as his limited career track leads him to a suburban community college, where he teaches courses in remedial composition and media studies to distracted students in overcrowded, windowless classrooms. In Confidence, Smith does two things very well. Which is, I think, the point. They are middle-aged mortgagees, burdened with wives and, in one case, a toddler, bound by commitments they can no longer easily escape and struggling with ambitions for things that seem relentlessly to evade them.

Clair West to historic sites like Fort York, from its earnest, grasping artists to the cosseted, pseudonymous enclave of Stilwoode Park. Hopefully as time goes by more small publishers will be represented on the list - they're usually the ones that need attention. He imagines that the ceilings leak, the foundations are caving in. Repeat examination of this theme could easily become truncated or repetitive in a novel but echoes here into a chorus both heartfelt and harrowing. Notes: Review first published online July 29,

Muriella Pent book

Smith almost too aptly articulates the dark absurdity of Leo scrabbling in the fetid garage for the videotapes, locating them at last beneath dusty gym equipment and a disused diaper pail. Notes: Review first published online July 29, Two new books—Confidence, a collection of short stories from consummate prose stylist Russell Smith, and Too Much on the Inside, by newcomer novelist Danila Botha—take on this neighbourhood in all its complex, contradictory and rapidly changing character.

Is sex always liberating? Still, when his two welfare-dependent women tenants skip rent and leave the empty apartment filthy, Tracy, a would-be erotic photographer for an amateur porn site, finds himself fantasizing sexually about one of them.

For some, it is the basis of public discourse itself, the hardware on which we run reason's software. The Caribbean poet Marcus Royston was a part of that when his native island shook off colonial rule. Smith writes two weekly columns for The Globe and Mail : one in the Review section, on culture and language, and the other in the Style section, an advice column for men.

Not that this stops them from trying, even as they come to grim sorts of recognition about the limits of their lives.

This is Buddhism snorted up one nostril late at night in unkind company in an underlit place. Unlike a novel, a collection can choose its closing note from several story endings.

Muriella Pent : a novel

Leo is unable to resist pressing play on one of a dozen tapes whose every moment he has memorized. Want to share your thoughts? Russell Smith, who has won a following through his Globe and Mail column as well as his books, hardly needs introduction.

The combination of wit and perception in Muriella Pent'and its brilliant dialogue, beautiful descriptive prose, assured handling of racial politics, and exact observation of modern types'underlines Russell Smith's claim to be one of Canada's subtlest, sharpest writers.
